Scottish Ambulance Service Manages EV Charging with Fuuse

Explore how Fuuse delivered a seamless migration and real-time network visibility. Now, the Scottish Ambulance Service is equipped to manage and scale its EV infrastructure.

Project challenge:

As the Scottish Ambulance Service looked to expand its EV infrastructure, it became clear that a robust EV charger management system was needed to:

• Enable seamless migration of chargers from the current charge point management system (CPMS).

• Scale efficiently to support future growth, existing site operations and evolving fleet, workplace, and public charging requirements.

Provide full charger access and usage initiated through access cards and an app, as well as bespoke tariffs designed for specific driver groups.

• Deliver real-time visibility of their entire charging network via a live status map, including overall charger uptime and the health of the charging estate.

• Support future developments, such as charger booking capabilities and other tools to support their operational fleets.

BACKGROUND

The Scottish Ambulance Service is a special health board providing essential care across Scotland, including central and rural communities. Their services include patient transport, on-call doctors, and critical response teams equipped with ambulances and paramedics.

Services cover approximately 78,0002 km and look after a population of just over 5,000,000 people. With a workforce of roughly 4,500 staff, the Scottish Ambulance Service operates around 150 ambulance stations and 13 vehicle workshops, managing its own vehicle maintenance. Their ambulance stations and workshops are located throughout the entire mainland of Scotland.

As part of its transition to a more sustainable fleet, the Scottish Ambulance Service is assessing its charging infrastructure requirements to support the operation of 1,500 fully electric or plug-in vehicles at approximately 150 locations. These vehicles include emergency response and support roles. In the future, the Scottish Ambulance Service expects to operate between 500 and 600 EV chargers directly.

solution

The Fuuse team facilitated a controlled migration onto our platform, providing expert support to minimise disruption at critical sites. To ensure seamless access, new branded cards were issued. Meanwhile, our platform continues to evolve, with features such as tariff management and app functionality currently in development to further enhance charger management capabilities.

To provide full visibility, Fuuse implemented an intuitive platform featuring an interactive map, with real-time charger status updates, enabling the Scottish Ambulance Service a full overview of their charging estate and charger behaviour. Now, they can quickly identify and address any operational issues, ensuring a reliable and efficient charging network for staff, contractors, and visitors.
