What are the main EV charging regulations?
CPOs need to meet several key requirements:
Transparent pricing: The maximum price must be clearly displayed in pence per kilowatt hour before charging starts, including applicable fixed charges.
Contactless payment: New public charge points rated at 8kW or above and existing public charge points rated at 50kW or above must support contactless payment without requiring a pre-existing contract.
Payment roaming: Since November 2025, public charge points must allow payment through at least one independent third party roaming provider.
99% reliability: Rapid public charge points rated at 50kW or above must achieve an average network reliability of 99%, with operators required to evidence and report their performance.
24/7 helpline: Operators must provide a free, staffed telephone helpline around the clock and record every contact.
Open data: Required charge point information, including real time status data, must be accurate, regularly updated and available in a machine-readable format.
