Navigating the Evolving Landscape of Public Charge Point Regulations in the UK

Embracing a New Era of Consumer-Friendly Electric Vehicle Charging: Navigating the Evolving Landscape of Public Charge Point Regulations in the UK

In a landmark move aimed at bolstering the adoption of EVs, the UK government rolled out the Public Charging Regulations in October 2023. These regulations are poised to revolutionise the charging experience for EV drivers nationwide. However, it's imperative to understand how these regulations will impact the organisations operating public charging stations—commonly known as Charge Point Operators or CPOs—as they bear the responsibility of implementing these changes.

Let's delve into the core tenets of these regulations and explore how Fuuse, the UK’s leading CPMS provider can lend a helping hand to CPOs in navigating this dynamic landscape.

Key Provisions of the Regulations

Pricing Metrics: Effective from 24 November 2023, public charge points are mandated to display the total cost of a charging session, including connection fees, in pence per kilowatt-hour (p/kWh). This transparency ensures that EV drivers have clear visibility into charging costs. The Fuuse platform enables CPOs to configure diverse pricing structures, prominently displaying pricing information on both the driver app and the charging station display.

Contactless Payment: Starting 24 November 2024, new public charge points exceeding 8 kW and existing rapid charge points over 50 kW must offer contactless payment options. The Fuuse back-office solution features credit card payment technology, enabling CPOs to provide hassle-free and contract-free payment options for EV users.

Reliability Standards: As of 24 November 2024, CPOs must ensure that rapid charge points (>50 kW) maintain a minimum availability of 99%. In 2023 Fuuse achieved 100% platform uptime and 2024 is looking just as strong.

Helpline Support: Effective 24 November 2024, CPOs are required to provide a free 24/7 helpline. Fuuse can support the ownership experience, offering available support to address driver queries or issues.

Open Data: Starting 24 November 2024, CPOs must maintain accurate data records and share them with relevant authorities upon request. Fuuse has extensive experience collaborating with third-party entities as well as ISO207001 accreditation to ensure compliance with data reporting requirements while upholding privacy laws.

Roaming: By 24 November 2025, CPOs must enable drivers to pay through at least one roaming provider at their charge points. Fuuse network is already integrated with major e-mobility service providers, facilitating seamless access to charge points across the UK and beyond.
