Transforming EV Charging

Arnold Clark partnered with Fuuse to deliver a future-proof EV charging network, combining ultra-rapid rollout, seamless app integration, and flexible pricing to enhance customer convenience and sustainability.

Founded in 1954, Arnold Clark has grown to become the UK’s leading independently owned car retailer, operating a network of over 200 branches nationwide. The company’s core business has evolved from selling cars (over 300,000 a year) to offering a comprehensive end-to-end service, including vehicle servicing, financing and fleet management.

As part of their commitment to sustainability and customer convenience, they have successfully rolled out their own ultra-rapid charging network – Arnold Clark Charge. This network is available to Arnold Clark customers, as well as the wider public. Arnold Clark customers can book charging sessions at a time that suits them, the wider public, can start a charge session easily via contactless payment or roaming partners including Octopus, Zapmap, and Allstar. Further integrations are already in the pipeline. 

the Challenge:

There were several considerations when setting up Arnold Clark Charge:

  1. Customer-Centric Features - To deliver a seamless experience, Arnold Clark required a bespoke solution to fully integrate with their dedicated Arnold Clark mobile app. The app, already used by customers for various purposes, also needed to support booking charging sessions to guarantee charger availability at a convenient time.

  2. Ultra-Rapid Charger Rollout - With plans to install 500 Kempower ultra-rapid DC chargers as part of a £30 million investment, Arnold Clark needed a future-proof charge point management system capable of handling over 100 hubs whilst ensuring uptime and reliability.

  3. Complex Pricing Structures - A multi-tariff pricing model was essential to offer preferential rates for customers and encourage more footfall. This required a flexible software solution to integrate seamlessly with Arnold Clark’s existing systems.

Arnold Clark partnered with Fuuse to design and implement a tailored EV charging solution. Key elements of the collaboration included:

Software integration

Fuuse integrated its platform with Arnold Clark’s existing mobile app using API feeds. This allowed drivers to book a charger at an Arnold Clark site, seamlessly initiate a charging session and enjoy a straightforward user experience.

Customer App Launch

Arnold Clark’s customer app now empowers users with seamless access to its charging network, reflecting the company’s commitment to customer convenience.

Multi-Tariff Capability

Fuuse enabled a flexible multi-tariff pricing model, supporting customer-specific rates and tiered pricing options, ensuring a competitive charging rate. The platform also enables public-facing payment methods, including contactless and roaming. Through roaming partners such as Octopus, Zapmap, and Allstar, Arnold Clark can extend the reach of its charging network while simultaneously promoting and strengthening the Arnold Clark brand to a wider audience.

Charger Rollout Support

Fuuse began by migrating all Arnold Clark’s depot chargers from multiple manufacturers. Next was the main installation of the Kempower DC ultra-rapid chargers, whereby Fuuse project managers worked with Arnold Clark to ensure a smooth rollout. Charging hubs are now live across the country with more sites being rolled out through 2025. 

THE RESULTS:

 The partnership has already delivered results:
