Driving Change: Workplace Charging Scheme for Education Institutions

Written by Kayleigh Sheldon

Originally devised to support businesses in adopting electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, the Workplace Charging Scheme has now been reconceptualised to cater to the unique needs of the UK’s education establishments. Nurseries, Schools, Academies and Colleges, as hubs of learning and community engagement, have a unique opportunity to embrace eco-friendly initiatives. Now, the Scheme, funded by the Department for Transport, extends financial incentives to educational institutions for the installation of EV charging points on their premises, championing sustainable transportation and carbon footprint reduction.

The integration of the Workplace Charging Scheme, also described as ‘Support for Greener Schools’, into these educational environments promises a multitude of advantages:

Firstly, it serves as a powerful educational tool, instilling eco-consciousness among students, faculty, and the broader community by showcasing a commitment to sustainability. By facilitating easy access to EV charging facilities, education establishments actively promote the adoption of electric vehicles among staff, students and parents, contributing to cleaner air quality and diminished pollution levels in their area.

Furthermore, by embracing EV charging infrastructure, schools align themselves with broader governmental objectives aimed at fostering eco-friendly transportation alternatives. Taking advantage of the Scheme not only advances their goals but also positions themselves as frontrunners in sustainability within their communities.

The financial incentives, provided through the Support for Greener Schools Scheme, offer welcome relief to schools' budgets, making sustainable investments more attainable. The scheme will provide up to 75% off the cost to buy and install charge points. This financial support enables schools to redirect resources toward educational initiatives while simultaneously championing environmental responsibility.

The scheme could also help the state-funded establishments generate their own revenue by allowing the public to access their charging infrastructure. By integrating Charge Point Management Software (CPMS) the establishments have the ability to open up their chargers to local residents during periods of closure such as weekends and school holidays. CPMS will allow the establishments to set their own rates and availability thus generating additional income to further support their students and faculty.

The government has committed to reaching net zero by 2050 and reducing carbon emissions from public buildings by 50% by 2032. More than a third of public emissions come from schools, colleges, and universities. Therefore, the Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education establishments epitomises the synergy between the education sector and governmental initiatives in driving positive change. By leveraging available resources and incentives, education establishments across the UK can play a pivotal role in creating a greener future.

The benefits of this scheme don’t end with the state-funded education institutions. Did you know as an OZEV approved installer you can fit authorised commercial chargers on behalf of UK state-funded establishments?

Eligibility: The grant stipulates that an installer must conduct a site survey and confirmed that the site can accommodate EV charging. This process allows for a contractor to offer comprehensive support for an institution, from the initial site survey and application to installation, software management, and maintenance. The grant covers 75% off the purchase and install cost which is a substantial cash incentive for education establishments to invest in charging infrastructure.

Increased Work Demand:  With educational institutions seizing the opportunity to  take up the grant,  this will inevitably mean an increase in demand for EV charging installations providing consistent work opportunities as educational institutions adopt EV’s and the demand for EV charging infrastructure grows.

Enhanced Reputation:  Working with schools on their sustainability initiatives reflects positively on an installer’s reputation. Being linked with sustainable projects shows that they are committed to environmental responsibility, which can attract more clients and referrals.

Networking Opportunities/Other Work: Collaborating with educational institutions opens doors for networking and potential referrals. Installers can build relationships with schools, colleges, and even other institutions such as universities, many of these tend to be multi-sited providing more business prospects whether that is for EV charging or other electrical contracting work.
